I have been a nurse for 15 years. I have been a hospice nurse for 4 years and that is where my passion is. Hospice started for me back in high school when I cared for my neighbors kids after school, the McKeevers. Dad Mark worked day shift and mom Julie worked2nd shift while raising4 children; Mark jr, Brooke, Lindsay, and Justin. Brooke was10 years old and had a brain tumor. I would watch the hospice nurse Jean Walker come in and care for Brooke. Brooke sadly passed away a short time later, but the impact of Jean’s care will stay with me forever.

  • I currently work as an on-call hospice nurse
  • Monday and Friday I make routine hospice nurse visits one week. The following week I’m on call Monday 4:30pm thru Saturday 8:00am Saturday.
  • In this position, I am responsible for triaging multiple calls and prioritizing them.
  • Work independently overnight, utilizing nursing judgment while working within my scope of practice.
  • At times, patients may need changes in medications at which time I then communicate with the on-call provider and obtain any new orders, updating our MAR.
  • Problems that may require a nurse visit from the on-call nurse include, but not limited to:
  • Death
  • New or uncontrolled pain
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Bleeding
  • Respiratory difficulty
  • Falls with injuries
  • Increased anxiety
