Shadowing

Shadowing a physical therapist in a hospital setting provides a unique opportunity to observe and learn about the role of physical therapy in patient care. As a shadow, I accompanied the physical therapist on their regular activities and learned about different rehabilitation and treatment methods. I also watched and helped with activities such as patient assessments, where you watch the therapist use tests and interviews to determine the physical capabilities and limitations of the patients. Additionally, I witnessed the process of treatment planning, wherein customized plans are created to enhance the mobility, strength, and general function of the patient. Another essential element I learned is helping with or watching therapeutic exercises such as strength training, balancing exercises, and range-of-motion exercises that are intended to improve patient recovery. I also learned about manual therapy, which is a hands-on approach to pain relief and improved mobility. It includes techniques such as massage, stretching, and joint mobilization. Understanding patient education requires observing therapists as they instruct patients and their families on exercises, home care, and condition management techniques. Additionally, I witnessed the application of a range of therapeutic tools and apparatus, including resistance bands, treadmills, stationary bikes, and electrotherapy machines. Lastly, I discovered how crucial it is to accurately record patient progress, treatment modifications, and results. This helped me to better understand the role of a physical therapist in a hospital by completing these tasks, which will expanded my knowledge and helped choose a path for my future in the health field.
