- As an ABA therapist for Answers for Autism I am left in charge of one on one sessions with adolescent clientele in which I service a curated list of activities that promote behaviors that are encouraged to be developed. Generally I work with kids ages 4-18 but at my youngest client has been the age of 9 while my oldest has been 16. With proper notification prior I am trusted to change a given routine by my supervisor if I feel another approach might work better. This situation has happened a few times with general success as I would base my suggestions on long term observations made. A specific example was when I was working with child who was struggling with isolating his emotions to specific scenarios and as a result would have negative moments from say a week prior spoil a good moment that given day. After hearing this I took the opportunity to use the avenue of “Non preferred activities” which is a typical exercise we do and changed it to a more roleplay like scenario in which I would present a given day with various instances of good and bad details and ask what he thought of the day as a whole. After reporting the results my supervisor said that my approach was similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and generally felt that it was refreshing. During these sessions I am also tasked with inputting behavioral data based on general ABC criteria and prompting natures(Verbal, Visual, Physical). Also have naturally had to work closely with the families involved with the children I work with and done so with great success thus far.

- Responsibilities of a Direct Support Professional are to follow weekly and daily activity schedules to meet the therapeutic needs of the participants. Implement all teaching and behavior support programs. Maintain data relating to each participant’s performance on individual teaching and behavior support programs. Measure effectiveness of programs and mastery level. Provide employment training to participants both on site and on community placements. Complete semiannual reports as assigned by Center Supervisor or Assistant Center Supervisor. Assist in the completion of daily paperwork regarding participant and center information. Participate in the development of IHPs and behavior plans. Maintain responsive professional and proactive communication with parents and colleagues. Drive vehicles to and from group homes and to community employment and training placements as needed or requested and ensure cleanliness and organization of Eden vehicles as well as complete checklists as needed or requested and report any service needs immediately. All of this being necessary for making sure the proper care of those with severe autism are implemented and ensured. Understanding and empathizing with the participants is also a huge part of the job as understanding is key to predicting and assuaging behaviors.
