As a hobby I started gardening at home. Over time I became more involved with specialty gourmet crops which were of interest to restaurants and produce sections of local grocery stores. I then started to grow items for sale to select customers and grew what they said that they would purchase. I became very skilled in this effort and was appreciated by my customers because a lot of what I grew they could not match the quality and price from other vendors.
While working at an accounting firm in the Chicago area as the firm marketer and financial counselor to clients I started a specialty garden in the Cabrini Greens Housing Development working with inner-city children teaching them gardening and business skills by selling our products to the best restaurants in Chicago. Some of our customers were Charlie Trotter's, Frontera Grill - Rick Bayless and Michael Jordan's restaurant.
Our efforts were recognized by HGTV after one of their reporters noticed a Cabrini Greens salad on Michael Jordans menu. HGTV did a documentary on the garden and the children who worked as gardeners and sales people at the local farmers market.
My furniture making skills were taught to me by my father. I particularly like looking at wood at retail shops and have made my own office furniture from curly sassafras wood (a rare wood).
