Work History

Wildland Firefighter

USFS Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area
02.2023 - Current
  • I work in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area as a Senior Firefighter on a type 2 IA crew.
  • Our PT program here in the Columbia River Gorge provides us opportunity to utilize the steep and rugged terrain as ample ground to perform physical training focused on intensive cardio with a combined regimen of calisthenics and weight training. We average 15-20 miles of cardio a week with consistent elevation gain of 1000-1500 feet. We mix in a day or two of calisthenics/weight training into our regular cardio throughout the week focusing on high intensity with limited rest between exercises.
  • I effectively perform my duties as a Senior FF on my crew, helping my module function in a fast paced and complex initial attack environment.
  • We work very closely with our local cooperators as land ownership and protection coverage often brings us out of our immediate unit boundary and onto state land to assist with fire suppression efforts.
  • Often I will function as an IC5 upon arrival at an incident to provide our dispatch with a sizeup and additional needs for fire suppression efforts.
  • Competently communicate with aerial resources as a point of contact, or to help direct apparatus during suppression.
  • I've participated in handline construction through various fuels types with a wide array of tools, from chainsaws, to pulaskis, rhinos, adz hoes, mcleods, combi-tools, and shovels.
  • Operated a chainsaw on incidents to cut line, fall hazard trees, aid line construction, brush road, assist mop up tasks, and during fire rehab work.
  • Efficiently kept times on a crew time report for my module while out on assignment.
  • Accurately gathered fire weather information through performing a spot weather forecast and reported over the radio.
  • Participated in medical training with available trauma, airway, c-spine, and ten man bags in various scenarios.
  • Practiced following the 8 line medical plan and reading it over the radio in multiple scenarios including active hoselay drills.
  • Competently complete routine station and crew vehicle maintenance tasks throughout out the week to ensure equipment and vehicles are in good working order, and that the facilities at the station are clean and well kept.

Wildland Firefighter

US Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit
04.2022 - 01.2023
  • I worked in the Basin as a GS-5 level Apprentice on a type 3 engine.
  • I'm well trained in various engine suppression tactics such as mobile attack, progressive hose lays, extended attack, and mop up. I'm knowledgeable of and the use of brass and types of hose we carry on our engines needed for these tactics.
  • I kept myself physically fit through participation in my stations physical training routine and training on my own as well. Examples of my physical training routines were running at least 3 miles 2 to 3 times a week, hiking steep terrain with my line gear for at least an hour 2 to 3 times a week, and then a day where I did a combination of weight lifting and interval training with limited rest between sets.
  • Proficient in building various types of hose packs and deploying them for fire suppression purposes. I worked with multiple engines on the Basin including their type 3's and type 6 engine and am familiar with their different style hose packs and fire suppression strategies and tactics.
  • Skilled with pumping and drafting methods used on type 3 engines and type 6 engines.
  • Participated in training and mock fire simulations to maintain readiness for incidents. On days of training we would simulate an incident and practice different suppression tactics, such as running a progressive hoselay to a mock fire, and throwing in added scenarios to add to the complexity of the training. Some examples of added scenarios include; a hoselay practiced in an urban interface environment with structure protection as the goal, a spot fire that had compromised the hoselay, and a blown hose somewhere in the hoselay.
  • I've participated in handline construction through various fuels types with a wide array of tools, from chainsaws, to pulaskis, chingaderas, adz hoes, mcleods, combi-tools, and shovels.
  • Operated a chainsaw on incidents to fall hazard trees, aid line construction, brush road, assist mop up tasks, and during fire rehab work.
  • Efficiently kept times on a crew time report for my engine while out on assignment.
  • Accurately gathered fire weather information through performing a spot weather forecast and reported over the radio.
  • Participated in medical training with available trauma, airway, c-spine, and ten man bags in various scenarios with backboard on engine.
  • Practiced following the 8 line medical plan and reading it over the radio in multiple scenarios including active hoselay drills.
  • Transported and operated multiple types of water pumps in support of fire suppression or training activities. Some examples of pumps I'm familiar with are Mark 3 high pressure pumps, floto pumps, mini wickman pumps, and trash pumps.
  • Competently complete routine station and engine maintenance tasks throughout out the week to ensure the equipment on the engine is in good working order, and that the facilities at the station are clean and well kept.
