- Participated in training drills and exercises such as line construction, sand table exercises, medical training scenarios, CPR training, portable pump operations, hose lay exercises, etc. In order to maintain proficiency in fire suppression tactics.
- Assisted in training new firefighters on the proper use of safety gear, such as AEDs, tourniquets, bandages, and medical transportation devices. As well as techniques for maintaining and using fire suppression equipment, such as chainsaws, portable pumps, and firing devices.
- Assisted in responding to emergencies as an EMT, assessing situations and providing necessary medical aid, primarily on the fire line.
- Monitored weather conditions for potential threats by taking weather observations, looking for increasing temperatures, lowering relative humidities, changes in wind direction, or increases in wind speed, as well as looking for the possible formation of thunder cells, which may impact fire suppression.
- I served as a lookout in order to maintain safety and LCES. While performing as a lookout, I was responsible for communicating within the crew via radio about changing fire activity, as well as relaying changing weather conditions for both the crew and division.
- Attended daily briefings with crew members to discuss strategy for the upcoming shift. Also, gave briefings in a small group format while in charge of a short squad.
- Communicated and coordinated with both county and state agencies while on the incident. This maintained effective communication within other agencies and gave notice of our crew's mission.
- Assessed terrain features such as slopes, wind direction, and vegetation types when responding to a wildfire as an initial size-up.
- Participated in hazardous fuels reduction projects for fire suppression in the forest. This included brush clearance to decrease the amount of ladder and ground fuels, tree felling in order to reduce overhead hazards for campgrounds and roads, and chipping and piling debris for future fuels reduction burns.
- Participated in prescribed burns using drip torches, fusees, and other firing devices in order to reduce ground fuels and clean up the forest.
- Conducted mop-up operations to extinguish remaining hot spots and reduce the risk of further spread by using backpack pumps, hose lays, and hand tools.
- Operated a chainsaw while constructing both direct and indirect handlines for wildfire suppression.
- Operated and set up portable pumps, such as the MK5 and Wickman 150, connected to high-pressure hoses during fire suppression activities.
- Performed firing operations with drip torches, fusees, hand-toss firing devices, and hotshot flare guns in order to contain advancing fires by burning the fuel ahead of the fire.
- Worked on demobilizing the crew after responding to the incident.
