Additional Information

The ability to identify diagnosis and dysphagia risk factors in the medical record to assist the SLP. I possess the ability to diagnose and dysphagia risk factors in the medical record for patients. As a student at the University of Houston, I was able to identify semantic, syntactic, and phonological categories relative to salient characteristics of speech, language, and voice disorders. I utilized these linguistic criteria to assist in my ability to create therapeutic stimuli materials for patients within the University of Houston Speech Clinic. I was also able to implement various speech equipment procedures and troubleshoot communication devices. Additionally, I had the ability to administer trials, manage communication devices and assessments as requested by the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP).

Knowledge of safe feeding and swallowing strategies

  • I have extensive knowledge of safe feeding and swallowing techniques, which were taught during the clinic, while studying Communication Sciences Disorders at the University of Houston. These techniques were to encompass safe swallow strategies such as slowing the pace of eating to accommodate delayed swallow or tucking of the chin to the chest while swallowing to help protect the patient’s airway.
  • I assisted the Speech Language Pathologist during Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing, Videostroboscopy, and Modified Barium Swallow Studies by setting up, operating, and transporting the equipment.
  • I also assisted both inpatient and outpatient Speech Pathology procedures including videostroboscopy, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and modified barium swallow studies.

Knowledge of linguistic parameters such as semantics, syntactic, and phonological categories to assist in creating materials for therapeutic stimuli and home programs.

  • As a student at the University of Houston, I gained an immense amount of knowledge of language development and theory. According to language development, phonology is the process of breaking down language into discrete sounds called phonemes. Syntax is about the rules governing how words are put together to form phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. Semantics is the area of literacy learning where these sentences and word phrases become meaningful. Through this knowledge, I was able to accurately implement materials for therapeutic stimuli at the University of Houston Speech Clinic.
  • I am also knowledgeable about linguistic disorders such as Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder (SPD), which is a developmental disorder based on the difficulty of understanding and using language.
  • I have knowledge of linguistic parameters and applied various techniques to children diagnosed with Autism.
