Work and Volunteering

Nagico Insurance

I worked in the medical insurance department where I logged and processed claims; as well as make requisitions, issue checks and apply checks for that claim. This job also consisted of processing monthly premium payments from clients. Often times my responsibilities were tedious and time sensitive, thus allowing me to further develop my strengths in task prioritization and attention to detail.

Student Technician Emory School of Public Health

I provided technological assistance with graduate students and professors at Emory's Public Health school. My supervisor frequently commemorated my ability to quickly adapt and find solutions to problems even if I were unfamiliar with the corresponding protocol. The ability to analyse a situation and apply knowledge is a skill I wish to develop and advance in preparation for future employment.

Emory's Autism Center

I worked part time in the Emory autism day care where I was able to interact and care for children between the age evidence-based practice in child development, early autism intervention and relationship-based learning. Our focus is on what will best serve the needs of children and families with an eye on innovation and advocacy for quality learning for all children. This experience has significantly impacted my ability to apply baseline knowledge and understanding, in this case, of a specific disorder, and apply it in unique ways to accommodate various manifestations of the disorder. Every day I am honoured with the ability to learn something new from co-workers that I greatly admire.

Winship Cancer Institute Volunteer

During my experience I was able to interact with patients and work under oncology nurses. I learned about the practical applications of cancer treatment as well as how to apply my passion for patient care in a real life setting. As an aspiring physician I have learned the importance of viewing an individual beyond their illness, for they are also their values, faith, culture and much more.

Hope Lodge Volunteer

Hope lodge offers free housing for individuals during their cancer treatment. I have the opportunity of talking to, cooking for, doing activities and playing games with these individuals. It has been an extremely rewarding experience.

Affiliations

Emory Phi Delta Epsilon

This is co-ed international medical fraternity and a member of the Professional Fraternity Association. We provide research opportunities and volunteer work at local hospitals and other medical institutions. This family of pre-medical students has offered me valuable insight into medical school and how rewarding the journey is.

Rotary Club of Road Town

This is an organization dedicated to community service and aid located in Road Town Tortola. All throughout high school, and undergraduate education during my summer and winter breaks, I would be an active member of this club offering my services in soup kitchens, food and clothing drives and fund raisers.

Research

Itzahki Lab

I have been shadowing Dr. Illanit Itzahki whose lab is dedicated to the research of cardiac arrhythmias, with a specific interest in long QT syndrome in children. Here I have learned plenty about skills and techniques required in cell culture, differentiation, and electrophysiology. I hope to join a research team that will allow me hands on experience and further inspire develop my understanding of laboratory protocols and technologies.
