Work History

GS-6 NPS Biological Science Technician

National Park Service
Crater Lake, OR
06.2025 - 10.2025
  • Returned as a GS-6 to work on the Long-term Limnological Monitoring Program of Crater Lake, in which I engaged in a multitude of deep-water lake data collection and sampling, including retrieving and redeploying long-term thermistor moorings, taking Secchi depths, utilizing Niskin bottles to capture water samples for nutrient analysis, chlorophyll counts, and primary productivity, and monitoring water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen levels.
  • Other projects I provided technical support on included CTD castings and data analysis, net zooplankton tows, GPS tracking of surface current waves utilizing The Old Man (a floating log celebrity at Crater Lake), crayfish trapping, snorkel surveys for both crayfish and Mazama newt, and newt collection for genetic preservation.
  • I have been certified via DOI's MOCC to operate motorboats, covering everyday position activities, as well as basic seamanship, navigation, emergency procedures, and all legal requirements.
  • Additionally, a significant part of this position has been mechanical maintenance of large research vessels (including motor maintenance, compartmental wiring, and grounding) and troubleshooting communication issues between computer software and scientific instrumentation.

GS-6 NPS Biological Fisheries Technician

National Park Service
Crater Lake, OR
06.2024 - 10.2024
  • During the 2024 summer field season I worked on a stream restoration project with the Aquatics branch of the Natural Resources Dept. for Crater Lake NP.
  • We focused on monitoring native Bull trout populations while eradicating invasive Brook trout species by piscicide application and manual extraction by electrofishing.
  • We facilitated Bull trout migration upstream through a man-made barrier and trap, where we took genetic samples, photo-ID, weight, length and inserted a PIT tag into the individual before transferring it upstream.
  • Other tasks from the season included environmental DNA sampling, surveys for spotted frogs, HOBO temp logger calibration and retrieval/redeployment, e-fishing, invertebrate sampling and data management.

West Coast Groundfish Observer

West Coast Groundfish Observer Program
Westport, WA
03.2023 - 08.2023
  • I worked as an on-call observer on fishing vessels and on land as a catch monitor. The role of an on-board observer is to provide estimates of total catch weight and collect data, aiding the state and federal government in creating and modifying management and protection plans for the fishing industry.
  • I was trained in species identification, and now have a widespread knowledge of approximately 200 to 300 species of fish found in the Pacific and along the shelf of the West Coast.
  • I was also required to take specific biological data to understand in greater depth some of the population dynamics of the fish species caught. This included dissections for otoliths (an age-determining structure), fin clips, sexing fish, and taking individual weights and lengths.

Science Tech on R/V Sally Ride and Norseman II

Oregon State University
03.2022 - 09.2022
  • Over spring break of 2022, in a field oceanography class, I had the opportunity to work on the R/V Sally Ride along the coast of San Diego, in which I deployed, drove, and retrieved a CTD, deployed, retrieved, and analyzed a plankton net tow, and deployed, retrieved, and collected samples from a multi-coring sediment instrument.
  • I took samples from the CTD to return to Andrew Thurber's lab for a methane concentration analysis.
  • On the Norseman II, I spent three weeks with Dr. Miguel Goni in the Arctic Circle, collecting CTD and underway samples for POC filtration.
  • I also aided other science crews from Harvard, Stanford, and UH Manoa with their data collection for chlorophyll a, nutrient concentrations, and an experiment regarding the toxic, HAB-producing Alexandrium, and its response to treatment with different amino acids.

Undergrad Research Lab Assistant

Oregon State University
Corvallis, OR
09.2021 - 09.2022
  • During my last year of undergrad, I worked in an Undergraduate/Graduate research lab at OSU under Dr. George Waldbusser that focused on ocean acidification research.
  • I have hands-on experience with day-to-day laboratory procedures, data collection processes, and data analysis/visualization programs.
  • I specifically worked with graduate student Erin Tully on the dissection of Olympic and Pacific oysters from Yaquina and upper estuarine farms, and observed shells for mud blister worm (Polydora websteri) infection.
  • I operated specialized laboratory equipment, including a salinometer, a muffle furnace (for ash-free dry weight calculations), and seawater particle sample filtering for suspended particulate matter (SPM) and chl a.

Quality Control Inspector (Air Sample Testing)

Kelsay Environmental
Portland, OR
03.2019 - 07.2019
  • I worked as a quality control inspector and air sample tester for an environmental consultant, Kelsay Environmental.
  • Inspected incoming materials for compliance with quality standards.
  • Maintained detailed records of inspections and test results accurately.
  • Prepared, read and processed sample filters for overall analysis on air quality
  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams to create a plan regarding building and air quality safety.
