  • The unit is managed by a group of 5 attendings and Physicians Assistants.
  • The patient population consists of heart transplants, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), kidney transplants, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), Impella and ventricular assist devices (VAD).
  • Responsibilities include recovering of the patients in the immediate postoperative phase which includes managing ventilated patients, titrating vasopressors and inotropes.
  • Managing CVVHD, passing medications and basic nursing care.
  • Additional responsibilities include responding to codes, rapid responses, precepting new hires into the CTCU and floating to the other intensive care units including medical, surgical, coronary and trauma.
  • Also collaborating with the care team and family to provide emotional support during their time in such an intense setting.

  • Frequently changing settings as directed by arterial blood gas results and moving toward the goal of.
  • Also, safely wean IABP and monitor for hemodynamic changes as directed.
  • Set up, initiate and manage CVVH as per orders.
  • Assist physicians and physicians’ assistants with bedside procedures.
  • Frequent floating to other intensive care units with patient to nurse ratio two to one.
