I experienced a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge and insight into her daily responsibilities and challenges as a dentist. I was able to actively observe her interact with patients, staff, and other dentist. Absorb knowledge about dental procedures, techniques, and treatment plans. I offered assistance when it was appropriate, such as preparing materials or helping with patient comfort. I asked questions and wrote down responses to deepen my understanding of dental practices and care. Most importantly I was able to observe a dentist truly care and listen to her patients needs.
Dr. Mills and her assistances showed me how to asses patients dental and facial irregularities to diagnose conditions such as malocclusions and develop treatment plans. She worked in an open area where she rotated patients at a fairly fast pace, designing and applying orthodontic appliances and monitoring their progress. She talked with me about her residency and how to prepare to continue my education for such.
During my time I set up mobile dental clinics and received training on equipment, clinic management, and biosafety guidelines. I performed triage, prepare dental trays for procedures, and manage sterilization. I also shadowed and assisted local dentists. I participated in a dental impressions and tooth waxing workshop. Receive cultural sensitivity training, participated in an introductory language class, and understand how long term in country alliances work. As well as collaborated closely with communities to support local public health development projects.
I identified, recorded, and analyzed dental pathological lesions to learn more about people who lived during a period of climate and environmental change. I took a lead role in a project to use archaeological literature to develop predictions for the types of micro-artifacts and aspects of the oral microbiome that could remain visible after 4000 years. I trained to use the SEM, perform image and EDX analyses of dental calculus from both India and Oman. This research has led to interesting insights about diet, occupational behavior, and the oral microbiome. The data will be cross-referenced.
I had the pleasure of being able to work along side dentist, give oral cancer screenings, and provide useful help wherever needed. I was able to become certified in the oral cancer screenings but using a light that would illuminate patches of concern as well as checking for any lump or abnormalities present in the neck and jaw.
I was able to shadow dentists as they made observations, applied treatment, and I asked questions when appropriate. I helped sterilize equipment on red side and set things up on white side. As well as organize and label materials. I handled proper disposal of trash and recycling materials according to the clinic policies and environmental guidelines. I ensured all areas were thoroughly cleaned and organized for the next event. I helped sterilize instruments properly, ensuring they were completely dry so they could be packed away safely and then helped packed everything up in the trucks.
This was an awesome experience to be apart of. I enjoyed being able to work alongside dental students, hearing about their journey through the program from theoretical studies to actual hands on clinical work. I was able to observe them work on patients and I remember Robby extracting four teeth and being even more fascinated and eager to join the dental field.
