Work History

Chief Engineer

Dutra Dredging
San Rafael, CA
01.2016 - Current
  • Started here as an HDR in their shop.
  • Duties included maintenance and special projects as they came.
  • Some of the first major projects I played a major role in were repowering a set of deck winches on a flat deck barge from 2 cycle detroits to tier 4 final cummins.
  • Retro-fitted small hydraulic dump scows with up-to-date hydraulics and freshened up what was left of existing system.
  • Eventually was put into a service truck, which was sent from job to job. Sometimes starting the same place every day to assist startup and make sure every machine got to work. After that would fall into whatever maintenance/ repair needed to be done on site, if none then would continue to another job or machine to complete repairs dispatched to me by the 2 mastermechanics.
  • Dutra is involved mainly in Marine construction and dredging, as well as some small aggregate plants. I have become very familiar with repairing tugboats / workboats, barges, floating equipment, anchor positioning equipment, conventional and hydraulic winches. 2 Cycle diesel engine repair, non-tier 4 cycle engine repair, tier 3, and tier 4 final engine repair. Dutra uses all manufacturers. We have detroits, Listers, Cummins, Cats, Northern Lights, Kubota, Deutz, John Deere.
  • Am familiar with diesel generator repair and AC electrical troubleshooting.
  • Eventually was made chief engineer on the DB Paula Lee, where I basically co-ordinated and performed every kind of repair you can imagine. Unclogging the toilets, changing light bulbs, replacing the track that the crane swings on, replacing the center pin, repairing the boom after it was damaged, in-framing engines, retro-fitting outdated equipment, repairing GPS positioning systems.
  • After several years they laid the keel on a new vessel, the CB Harry S. It is a flat deck barge with a Liebherr 8300.2 crawler crane aboard. I have been the C. Engineer from the beginning and have been responsible for keeping records, maintenance logs, performing repairs, and implementing a maintenance procedure that fits the needs of this 1 of a kind dredge dredge, and also ensures the safe use of all equipment on board.
  • The crane aboard the Harry S is a new model from Liebherr, I believe we were the 5th company to receive one, and we have learned a whole lot about this powerful hydraulic crane as we labor it 22 hours a day 7 days a week.
  • I personally trained the Watch Engineers that work directly under me, and one of them has been promoted to Chief Engineer to act as my relief when I am on scheduled time off.

Heavy Duty Repairman

Bigge Crane and Rigging
San Leandro, CA
07.2014 - 01.2016
  • Completed apprenticeship program at Bigge and performed all the duties expected of a journey-level mechanic.
  • The master mechanic at the start of my employment asked which areas I was knowledgeable in. I had not done much electrical work, and he made sure I was thrown at all of the electrical faults that came in.
  • After bolstering my electrical knowledge, he then made sure I got exposure to hydraulic troubleshooting.
  • After he deemed I was proficient in these areas, I was sent to the fab shop across from the mechanics shop, to learn welding, fabrication and some machining.
  • A year into my employment at Bigge, I was on par with most of the journeymen there. Repairs often included running cranes to dismantle other cranes that needed service. Removing hydraulic cylinders and rebuilding them in house. Removing telescoping boom sections for repair and to repair operating mechanisms internally. Using diagnostic tools to troubleshoot engine and emissions faults. Reading schematics, advanced troubleshooting, and specialty tools were commonly used to diagnose intermittent issues.
  • Am familiar with the safe operation of crawler, RT, and AT cranes. Including reading load charts, and ensuring safe configurations.

Heavy Duty Repairman

Sukut Equipment

  • Was taught how to service all of the Caterpillar machines on site, and eventually was put in charge of maintenance. Duties included fueling, greasing, and changing oils / filters.
  • Kept track of fuel quantities in bulk tanks and how much was used and in what machines daily. Recorded hours bi-weekly to schedule maintenance and inventoried maintenance items weekly I.E. air filters, oil filters, oils, grease, etc..
