HPS Smoking Policy-Effective October 1, 2023

  • HPS is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace and to promoting the health and well-being of its employees. It has been proven that smoking is a danger to your health. Employees in proximity to smokers are also in danger from secondary smoke. For these reasons, the following policy has been adopted and applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors of HPS.
  • Under this Zero-Tolerance policy, smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited on Company premises to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all employees. Smoking is defined as the “act of lighting, smoking, or carrying a lighted or smoldering cigar, cigarette or pipe of any kind.” Vaping refers to the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems or electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes, e-pipes, e-hookahs, and e-cigars.
  • There are no designated “smoking breaks.” Employees who choose to smoke and/or vape are only permitted to do so under the following conditions:
  • During their lunch period
  • Outside of the building, with a minimum distance of 25 feet from any entrance/exit, including the main entrance, breakroom, and warehouse.
  • HPS managers and team leaders are expected to enforce this Zero-Tolerance policy when an employee is taking any smoking/vaping breaks outside of their standard lunch period by holding violators accountable per our Progressive Discipline Policy and our Rules of Conduct (see pages 18 and 19 of the Company Handbook). Vaping inside the building is also strictly prohibited, and violators will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination per our Progressive Discipline Policy.
  • Knowing that this policy may not be popular with some, we have a process in place for resolving complaints about this policy:
  • Complaints about the application of this policy should be brought to the attention of Human Resources or the General Manager for resolution.
  • The complaint should be submitted in writing and should identify specific objections.
  • HPS will investigate the complaint and resolve it in accordance with the policy.
  • No employee will face adverse action for raising a complaint or asking a question about this policy.
  • HPS has resources available to full-time, benefits enrolled employees who are interested in quitting smoking. Please see Human Resources for more information on the Horizon Blue Smoking Cessation program.
