Born without ears, my first 14 years were in virtual silence. These years were spent in a Chinese Orphanage where I was delivered at birth by parents not wanted a child without handicaps. These were difficult years, The orphanage offered no special training or support for it deaf residents. At fourteen do to the intervention of both members of the expat community in Suzhou and a sympathetic doctor I received a cochlear implant and my world changed. I could hear! I listened to everything I could especially television and the internet. There was a key board in the orphanage and I learned to play by ear. I started to learn English. In America while studying English at Cape Fear Community College I played the piano for my host family and students at entertaining the students who were amazed that I could play complicated classical pieces by ear. Starting school at 14 I had a lot to learn. I've worked hard. My passions are photography and finding ways I can work with and help people who are facing the kind of challenges that I faced at the orphanage. I love helping people. I believe that do to my hearing problems I have an enhanced ability to see things in greater depth and to read faces and body language in a more sensitive way that people who have had hearing all their life.
