My Father was a commercial pilot and a captain for United Airlines. Because of my Father's background in aviation, I was introduced to flying at a very young age. My Father would pick my brother and me up from preschool and he would take us to a playground located near BWI to watch airplanes take off and land. My first ever Halloween custom I was an airline pilot. My Dad even let me borrow his hat that he wore with his uniform when he flew for Jet Blue. I understand that being an airline pilot requires a tremendous commitment level because of its time consumption and willingness to make sacrifices for it to happen. My Father would spend seven weeks in Denver, Colorado, because of pilot training, and he would only enjoy a few rest days with our family before departing for another trip. There would be some months when I would only see him three or four times, which is an important reason as to why I valued his presence tremendously. I feel as if I am already prepared to take on the challenges of becoming an airline pilot because of the hectic ice hockey schedule I experienced during high school. I can relate to my Father's situation in sacrificing time with family when my classmates were relaxing or enjoying themselves on the weekends, and I traveled up and down the east coast to play a competitive schedule. I had to miss my senior year homecoming celebration because I had two games in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In addition, I also missed out on other senior events, such as prom and beach week because I was out of town for ice hockey. Most people my age would be outraged that they had to miss out on their senior year events, but the truth is, hockey was my passion, and there was no better place for me to be than an ice arena! With that said, I have the commitment level that it takes to become an airline pilot because of my attitude, determination, and my willingness to live uncomfortably to achieve my goals.
