Research

Dr. Robert Hakan, Interpretation of Dreams (Mock Research), Wilmington, 2021

  • Investigated to determine if journaling about dreams would give insight into an individual's self concept.
  • Selected twenty undergraduate students from the class, who were chosen out of convenience and compensated with an additional three points for their overall grade in the course.
  • Participants kept a dream journal for a two-week period where they expressed the content of their dreams.
  • Participants reviewed their dream journal before the end of the day for their dream reflection, where they wrote about their thoughts and feelings.
  • Participants were provided an emotions questionnaire; a rating-scale designed to analyze the emotions participants felt during their dream state and waking state.
  • Although not found statistically significant, I discovered past studies that supported the hypothesis, meaning, journaling about one's dreams reflected individuals' concerns, interests, and activities in daily life.

Dr. Jeffrey Toth, Effects of Contextual Background on Emotional Recognition (Research Project), Wilmington, 2022

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a contextual background on emotional perceptions.
  • The contextual backgrounds consisted of happy or sad emotion inducing images and were embedded into an image of an individual's face expressing happiness or sadness.
  • The images were either congruent, where the facial expression and background matched emotionally (happy facial expression and happy contextual background), or incongruent, where the facial expression and background did not match emotionally (happy facial expression and sad contextual background).
  • Twenty-five undergraduate students recruited from the University of North Carolina Wilmington were chosen out of convenience and were compensated with an additional three points for their overall grade in the course of their choosing.
  • Testable, an online experimental platform, was used to show the congruent and incongruent images in random order.
  • Manipulated time frames randomly assigned to the images (.5 seconds and 1 second) to see if there was an effect in the emotional recognition of the images.
  • After the data collection, using Vassarstats, I ran a 2x2 two-factor ANOVA with repeated measures on both factors to see if there was an effect of contextual backgrounds on emotional recognition. Additionally, I included reaction time to investigate the effects of contextual backgrounds on emotionally congruent and incongruent images.
  • The results were statistically significant, the emotional perception condition and reaction time conduction showed p < .0001. Meaning, participants found it easier to perceive emotion more accurately when shown embedded images for a longer amount of time. As well as, with incongruent images participants tended to rely on the contextual background more often when shown facial emotion for a shorter amount of time.

Dr. Jasmine Norman, DISCO (Lab Research), Wilmington, 2022

  • Under Dr. Norman, I have been working as a research assistant providing support of any form to facilitate her research.
  • Created posters to put around campus that promote the studies Dr. Norman has been conducting.
  • Created my own hypothesis to add to her current study of individuals' perception of pronouns (he/she/they): one's culture or race can influence the understanding of they/them pronouns.
  • Conducting surveys for the undergrad students at UNCW to collect the data needed for the research article we will be collaborating on.
  • Presented my hypothesis and findings at the undergraduate research showcase (12/01/22).
