American civil rights leader and politician. Known for chairmanship of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Led the 1965 march in Selma, Alabama, that was halted by police violence. The event became known in the history of the civil rights movement as "Bloody Sunday." Later served multiple terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
