Peer Support Specialist
I was hired as a Peer Specialist at Helio Health on May 8th 2023. I knew with my degree I could have started in a higher paying position but my reason for coming to this field was to work directly with, and help people begin and continue their recovery and this is the job where I can accomplish that. I also started in this position because although I have a higher education, I had no experience in the field and I knew this would be a good place to start. While working in this position, I have learned a great deal and I have been able to help people in many ways along their journey in recovery from the very beginning helping them into detox or inpatient rehabilitation, to helping those who are in long-term recovery with legal, housing, employment, family, and more. These four months in this position have been very rewarding and I am excited to continue helping people along their path of recovery. Here is a list of some of the things I have been able to help individuals with in their recovery.
- Built relationships with others based upon trust and honesty by using active listening and dynamic communication skills
- Demonstrated extensive knowledge of recovery and wellness principles and shared this information with others struggling during recovery
- Assisted individuals in identifying and re-engaging with family, friends and other natural supports to build support system
- Transported individuals to medical appointments and support meetings whenever needed
- Participated in clinical staffing meetings and coordinated with clinical staff to develop and implement individualized treatment plans
- Provided ongoing assessment, problem-solving and skill teaching to assist individuals with activities of daily living
- Listened to clients' concerns and provided encouragement and support
- Supported individuals dealing with mental health and emotional issues
- Provided emergency response in crisis situations to diffuse tensions and prevent violence
- Educated clients on dangers of substance abuse and prevention techniques
