In January of last year, I decided to work at Hat Creek (West Lake Hills) as the cashier for the front of the house. The Hat Creek location I applied for was short-staffed and in great need of new employees, so I was placed in various positions for the first time. Even though I used to be a cashier, I was given many different tasks, such as picking up the main phone, scheduling birthday parties for families, training new employees, dishwasher, food handling, servicing via drive-through, and even handling alcohol for the first time. I make the Margarita mix during my shifts, pour beer for the customers, and bring wine bottles out if anyone buys a glass. I am doing it all, of course, with my TABC license.
Once I had been working for Hat Creek for about a year, I decided to branch out away from the food industry and make my way towards retail. After finding the brand Marine Layer and interviewing with them, Marine Layer took me in as a Seasonal Sales Associate. And for the entirety of the winter break from November to January of 2025, I could easily pick everything up! While being a cashier gives you the basic skills of customer service, selling your product to people is a whole new level of communication. Greeting and welcoming your buyers has never been more critical to a successful business. That is one of the many things I consider valid. After working for Marine Layer, while it wasn’t as long as my time with Hat Creek, it still gave me these skills: product knowledge, active listening, problem-solving, time management, identifying needs, and being creative. I aspire to do my best with what I have accomplished in both positions regarding customer service, and I always look forward to sharing these goals with future companies.
As for education and more of my background:
I graduated from Westlake High School in 2023 and attended a semester at Texas State University. After my first semester, I realized I needed a more structured schedule and would like to build my resume by working a part-time to a full-time job. After finding and working for both Hat Creek and Marine Layer I fell in love with helping people and the environment. I then felt more confident and decided to attend Highland Austin Community College.
I hope to work as many hours as possible to use my days productively during the week. After undergoing customer service for a year now, I’ve found that I enjoy dedicating any free time after my studies to helping a business grow. Adapting to a new environment and team of people has been no problem for me and won’t be any time soon.
