Jose Gonzalez

I am a first-generation student at Columbia, majoring in Political Science, and minoring in Public Health, with an interest in law, government, and the corporate world. Witnessing and experiencing institutional disparities in my predominately immigrant and Latine community sparked my interest in equity, human rights, public policy and international relations. Interests I pursued through community, grassroots organizing, lobbying, and activism. These experiences honed my skills in strategic marketing and advocacy. This summer, I interned at the U.S. House of Representatives, gaining hands-on experience with the legislative process, including legislative research, public policy analysis, report drafting, and communication. As I reflect on this, it is clear that I seek to utilize any position I occupy to uplift and empower marginalized communities.

Central American Legal Assistance (Spanish Translator + Community Organizer), pickleball (beginner), tennis (beginner)

• First-Generation, Low-Income (FLI) Student Advisory Board | Class of 2026 | Representative,Spearheaded the development proposal for an FLI Center to serve over 7,000 students and advocated for the inclusion of undocumented students. The proposal was approved by the Board of Trustees on 03/24/24., Led outreach efforts to 15+ college campuses, designed 4+ surveys, and engaged with more than 3000+ students over two years.
• Beyond the Bars | Fellow| 09/23, 05/24 | Led project management efforts by assisting in curriculum development and coordinating 50+ guest speakers at Beyond the Bar's 14th National Criminal Justice Summit, which hosted over 2,000 attendees., Collaborated with a team of 5 to conduct a cross-benefit analysis of 10+ catering options and related essentials, optimizing conference experience within a $5k budget., Led 10+ 'Know Your Rights' forums, educating over 800+ immigrants about their civil rights and liberties at an immigration center.
