Last year I lost a best friend. He was caring, kind, and smart. He had a laugh that makes other people laugh along. He was the most important person in my life. And he was transgender.
When I lost him, I found out I was the person he had asked to take care of his funeral. There was a lengthy legal battle between myself, his partner, and his biological family. They wanted to bury him under a name he hadn't used for over ten years in a dress he wouldn't have even worn before he discovered himself. It took a lengthy legal battle, but I am proud to say I won this battle for him and he was terramated as he wanted. We took the soil to a local LGBT hangout where he lived and used it in their rose garden dedicated to all the community members that had been lost over the years.
The kind of feelings you feel when your best friend can't even be free to be himself even in death sits with you. It weighs on you in a way I cannot describe. When I heard of this job opportunity, I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do. Especially in the political climate of Idaho. I want people to know that there are people out there who see their inherent value. I want to keep them from my best friend's fate.
