I hope to gain experience in different areas of research, development, and operation so that I may be more prepared when those responsibilities are laid on me in the future. I hope to learn how to answer my questions on the world and the nature of existence, and to work with those wiser than me so that I may understand new perspectives and ways of thought I previously had not acknowledged. I understand the limits of my own knowledge and that of solitary thought, and I hope to be afforded the opportunity to learn, share, and grow from every experience.
As a insider within the Internal Revenue Service, I have received both training and clearance on handling sensitive documents and taxpayer information, and I use this information daily to analyze and diagnose potential issues with tax forms, and work with Tax Examiners to resolve them.
I work to order, process, and file incoming work to my department and ensure that the required forms are well maintained, assigned, and distributed to the correct areas of the department.
I was tasked with leading a small special project group from May 2023 to June 2023 within the department for rare cases with related causes, and worked as a team with two coworkers to problem solve and implement ways to organize, connect, and distribute related cases within the department while not interrupting the preexisting workflow, and now there is a small permanent team of clerks using our developed strategies.
When approached by a Tax Examiner or Team Lead about missing cases, I communicated and corresponded with warehouse and mail room staff to locate and retrieve lost documents and have them routed to the correct department.
I have been trained in the Internal Revenue Service's IDRS system where I have assigned cases to Tax Examiners, opened and closed cases to organize and manage department inventory, and created reports of department activity throughout the week to present to my Team Lead.
Additionally, outside of the standard procedures of my job, I assist with the onboarding process for new hires to the Internal Revenue Service, and help to develop training material for both the onboarding into the agency and into my specific department.
I regularly work with my team lead and department manager to optimize and improve the work flow of the department.
For instance, a long term goal of my department is to reduce the amount of paper we order from the printers. In this effort, I worked as a group with a coworker to develop a system to determine and label documents that did not require a physical presence within the department and could, theoretically, be accessed online. We presented it to our lead and she brought it up with her managers, and we implemented the system into the standard procedures of the department and drastically reduced the incoming flow of paper.
As a carhop I was tasked with preparing and serving food in a completely sanitized environment to customers, as well as assisting the kitchen and front of house staff when I was needed.
I worked to achieve high customer satisfaction and to make the lives of my coworkers easier, and I developed valuable teamwork skills in a fast paced, high stress environment.
I demonstrated and developed quick problem solving and communication skills as I settled disputes between customers and coworkers within and outside the store.
Within my nines years in the organization, I have developed critical leadership and communication skills that I continue to use in every day life.
I have volunteered for assistance with charity events through Boy Scouts, and I have helped with the construction of many social projects not limited to but including:
- New water fountains for schools.
- Stronger, more visible, and safer pathways and trails in local parks.
- New playgrounds for schools and neighborhoods.
- Environmental clean up operations for nearby communities.
- Raised funds to help struggling families.
Perhaps the most challenging venture I set out on as a Scout was a two week long backpacking trip through the Philmont mountain range between Colorado and New Mexico in July of 2021. It was the peak of monsoon season at the camp and me and my friends worked together to push through adversity and brave the fierce conditions. We experienced torrential amounts of rain, lightning, hail, and were stalked by a mountain lion for two days on trail, but we stuck together, drank and purified many bottles of water, and plotted and planned our route, meals, and safety procedures. We climbed up to around 13,000ft at the capstone of the journey, and spent our last 3 days descending the mountain so we could return home.
Unfortunately, due to financial reasons I could not afford to continue my membership within the Boy Scouts of America, but the skills I developed will follow me forever.
