Description of Unit

NICU (Level 1 and 2) is committed in giving the full range of services in the region to well, sick and critically ill newborn babies. It has a total of 37 beds which includes 7 incubators and 30 bassinets. The unit is divided into NICU, Septic-in, Septic-out, Isolation and Well Babies. The Patient/Nurse Ratio for NICU patients is 1 nurse to 1 or 2 patients; Septic-in/out is 1 nurse to 5 patients; Isolation is 1 nurse to 1 patient; Well Baby is 1 nurse to 8 patients.

(Well-Baby)

  • Assisted pediatric doctors upon delivery of the newborn then places the foot tag for proper identification
  • Places the newborn under a warmer
  • Administered vitamin k intramuscularly in anterior lateral thigh and eye ointment on both eyes for prophylactic treatment
  • Recorded newborn measurements; footprint labeled for proper identification of the newborn
  • Wrapped newborn with double and thermal blanket and placed under droplight to prevent cold stress
  • Monitored and recorded vital signs until the newborn is stable
  • Fed newborn every 3 hours or per demand then burped thereafter
  • Monitored newborn's passing out of meconium and urine within 24 hours of life
