I was hired in March of 1985 by Salt Lake County Animal Services as Public Relations Manager working with radio and television to promote responsible pet ownership. First to become pro-active in the industry. Promoting sterilization of all cats, dogs, rabbits, any and all domestic pets. Salt lake county became an example throughout the U.S. I taught seminars under the direction of the director of Animal Services for the next 10 years. I was on the panel to re-write ordinances for the field operations. I was fortunate to develop a strong bond with over 5 TV channels and 12 radio stations in order to promote adoption, education and owner responsibility.
I left the Public Relations Department and transferred to the field in1998. I scored 87% on the Selection Test. My years as an Animal Control Officer changed the lives for hundreds of pets as well as people. Once a graduate from the Peace Officer and Training (P.O.S.T)as a Special Functions Officer, my involvement in cruelty investigations tripled. Henry's Law became a 3rd degree felony charge in the state of Utah. Henry was a Dachshund placed in an oven by the boyfriend of the dog owner and his feet were severely burned. At that time the laws were changed to a 3rd degree felony based on the level of cruelty. I became astute on every state and federal law regarding animals large and small.
Received and responded to animal related calls and agency assists where animals were on scene by radio communication, in vehicle computer system(MDT)and related software.
Knowledge and memorized Utah State Radio 10- Codes and Animal Control AN Codes
Investigated animal cruelty, animal bites, animal attacks, dogs running at large, animal nuisance, and other violations pertaining to animal control ordinances and jurisdictions served by Salt Lake County.
Responded to injured animals, HBC, animals in distress, sick, abused and neglected in a quick response time. Livestock, dogs, cats, birds, all domestic and some wildlife and reptiles. Transported to veterinarians for immediate evaluation when Salt Lake County veterinarian not available.
Performed humane euthanasia to severely injured and sick animals.
Maintained computerized and paper based logs of daily calls. Entered animal description, owner information if known, description of violation and remarks as to action taken and follow up if needed. information on each call as to level of warning taken(verbal, Notice of Violation, citation.
Maintained County vehicle and equipment, disinfected animal cages, cat traps and nets after each use. Maintained water coolers with fresh water daily.
Acted as a field training officer(FTO) for many years and was involved in the selection of new hires. Coordinated with field management, supervisors and Dispatch to ensure efficient service and coverage in the field.
Vaccinated and micro-chipped animals, licensed and ran proof of rabies vaccinations.
Transported injured animals
Collected evidence, interviewed dog and cat owners, victims, witness statements in order to complete reports for issuance of citations, notice of violations or recommended education classes.

Run 3-4 miles a day with or without my dog, Elsha, a 4 year old Australian Shepherd. I hike in State and National Parks. I owned my own sailboat and sailed at Great Salt Lake, I sold it in 2012. I now sail occasionally with friends in San Diego and when time permits on the gulf side of Florida. Have friends in St Petersburg at the marina.
