Summary

My academic background and hands-on research experience reflect my determination to excel in biochemistry as a foundation for a future in medicine and community health. Overcoming personal challenges has given me resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of purpose. I bring strengths in scientific problem-solving, leadership, and a deep commitment to serving underserved communities. My goal is to complete a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of Austin to further my education and my career.

Work History

Citizen Science Undergraduate Research Intern

Earth & Environmental Sciences, ACC
06.2022 - 07.2022

(5 weeks, 12 hrs/week)

  • Participated in research focused on flood hazards in Central Texas and their socio-economic and environmental impacts on vulnerable communities.
  • Collected and analyzed historical and current surface water data to identify high-risk flood zones and estimate “tipping points” for at-risk neighborhoods.
  • Conducted community surveys and stakeholder analyses to assess socioeconomic challenges caused by flooding.
  • Utilized data analysis and modeling to predict risks and guide mitigation strategies for residents and businesses.
  • Created survey instruments, managed informed consent, and organized project data for accurate reporting.
  • Presented findings to KXAN News and community members, improving public awareness and communication.

Lab Assistant Intern

KJ Scientific
01.2022 - 05.2022

(16 weeks, 20 hrs/week)

  • Proactively assisted lab manager in daily operations within a GLP and ISO/IEC 17025-certified biotechnology laboratory, ensuring smooth and compliant workflows.
  • Performed PCR-based quality control testing, TAC & TYMC plating, and gel electrophoresis to verify product integrity and identify microbial contamination, improving overall accuracy in product safety assessments.
  • Executed bioaccumulation and metabolism studies using fish liver S9 and HEP fractions, applying SOPs to determine bioconcentration factors (BCF) for environmental risk evaluation.
  • Enhanced assay reliability by implementing positive controls (e.g., pyrene) and validating calibration curves through Continuous Calibration Verification (CCV).
  • Supported hemp product compliance testing using AOAC-approved methods, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards such as Texas THC limits.
  • Improved operational efficiency by maintaining organized documentation, assisting with SOP development, and streamlining reagent sourcing for timely experiment execution.
  • Collaborated with analysts to troubleshoot experimental challenges, demonstrating adaptability and contributing to accurate data reporting for clients and internal review.

Volunteer Experience

Family Support – Cleaning Services
From the age of 15, I helped my mother and grandmother clean houses to support our family financially. I learned responsibility, time management, and the importance of hard work. This experience also gave me insight into helping others, teamwork, and perseverance.

Clothing Donations – Nicaragua
During my sophomore year of high school, I traveled to Nicaragua with my grandmother to distribute clothing and other essentials to families in need. This experience showed me the real-world challenges faced by underserved communities and inspired my dedication to helping others through service and healthcare.

Medical and Administrative Support
I assisted my grandmother with doctor appointments, proofreading medical forms in English while my mother translated questions in Spanish. This early exposure to navigating healthcare systems gave me a firsthand understanding of the barriers non-English speakers and low-income families face in accessing care.

High School Involvements

From 11-12th grade I assisted with painting and designing a mural for the YMCA in collaboration with the Art Club. In 11-12th grade I tended to plant beds and maintained a sustainable, visually appealing landscape on school ground in collaboration with the Gardening Club.

Interests

  • Visual Arts: I have always enjoyed painting, drawing, and sculpting using various mediums I have participated in local art shows in high school and received awards
  • Nature & Exploration: I enjoy spending time outdoors and learning about ecosystems and maintaining the beauty of our natural world
  • Travel & Cultural Learning: I have traveled around the Mediterranean, exploring different cultures, traditions, and cuisines
  • Cooking & Baking: I love experimenting with recipes from diverse cultures and sharing food as a way to connect with others
  • Philosophy & Psychology: I enjoy studying human behavior and mental wellness to improve personal growth and support others in need
  • Creative Growth & Curiosity: I value learning, exploration, and creativity as tools for critical thinking, personal development, and community impact
