Honors Thesis: "Erasing Healthcare Disparities: A Nurse’s Guide"

• This research examined strategies nurses can employ to reduce healthcare disparities, particularly access-related, racial, and gender discrimination. The study emphasized the importance of bias awareness training, monitoring social determinants of health, patient advocacy, and cultural education.
• A survey was conducted with nursing students from Thiel College and SRNA students from Youngstown State University (YSU) to assess their views on cultural competence and their experiences with healthcare disparities.
• Key findings highlighted that while participants recognized the importance of cultural competence training, nearly half of them reported feeling underprepared to serve diverse populations due to limited resources and policies.
• Financial and insurance constraints were identified as the most common disparities, underscoring the need for advocacy and additional tools to ensure healthcare equity.
• The research contributes to ongoing efforts to better prepare healthcare professionals to address disparities and promote inclusivity and equity in patient care.
