The Citadel requires Leadership Development Courses to be taken each semester. Through these courses, I was further educated on the importance of tact, ethics, and values. I employed these factors into every place of work whether that be volunteering or my jobs. Within the Corps of Cadets, students are encouraged to interview for positions of leadership within their respective companies. Companies are organizations of about one hundred cadets. Four companies are organized under one unit called a battalion.
Each year following my freshman year, I interviewed for and earned leadership roles which came with various challenges. For example: one of my roles dictated that my responsibilities were to assist the top two other individuals in command of our company and organize though chain of command that all members of our company were: in good academic and physical standing, in good behavioral conduct, and that no one was left unaccounted for. A challenge that I faced was with a group of individuals who were lacking in an area of academic proficiency. It happened to be in a class that I had previously taken. The simple solution would have been to refer them to the success center for counseling. Instead, I gathered volunteering individuals who excelled in the subject and had them tutor the struggling group. This was in conjunction with referring them to the counseling center. Those individuals raised their grades and built camaraderie with one another in a couple short weeks through teamwork.
Students have the opportunity to achieve above the required hours for community service. I spent my hours in our library when I wasn't on the clock as an employee. A small farm in West Ashley frequently needed an extra hand to clear debris, handle vegetation, and do small shop jobs. At local schools I have also assisted in the classroom for pre-k and elementary grades. Each of these, in their own manner, helped my self development further and allowed me to assist others in their tasks.
Through Navy ROTC and through my time at Officer Training Command Newport I also allowed myself to emerge as someone who was informed, motivated, and compassionate. Though the Navy is no longer in my sights, I'm elated that I can view new horizons in the education and nurturing of our youth.
