4-H and independent show
I started the agg extracurricular activity called 4-H when I was 10 years old up until the age of 16. The 4-H club I joined was called Elbow Creek 4-H. For 4 years in 4-H I participated in the rifle and shotgun shooting sports and for one year I tried the baking class provided by the club. I showed lambs from the first year of joining the club and rabbits for 2. For the 4 last years I have had a breeder ewe (a female sheep), and showed her babies at the Tulare fair. During the years I was in the club I had created life long relationships with the people that I grew up with in the club. I learned how to medicate lambs on the normal routine (such as dewormer) and how to give extensive medical care to those animals when needed. During that process of learning the norms for animal care, I learned how to castrate a lamb and how to help deliver a baby lamb. The sheep show kids, including myself, learned of the structure of bones and meat within a lamb, due to showing a market animal. Then for two more years after I disbanded from the club I showed lambs independently with the help of family and friends. This year of 2023 was my last year in showing animals. For 8 years I have shown lambs at the Tulare County Fair and that experience has expanded my overall experience of communication, hard work, participation, character building and expense management.
Sports
Track and Field:
From way back in the beginning of 3rd grade in the year of 2013, I have participated and won several medals in Track and Field throwing sports. During high school, I helped create a strong connection in the team that I participated with and helped the coach in his leave of absence. Till this day, in the year of 2023 I am still contenting my passion of throwing sports though the COS Track and Field team on a college level. Being a part of Track and Field I created long lasting relationships with people I now gladly call my friends. Track has helped me break out of my self conscious mind and help reach out to those around me.
Wrestling:
My Junior and Senior year I joined the Redwood girls wrestling team. The first year that I joined, I had to work hard and persist in learning several techniques and skills in the art of wrestling. I lost and won about a half of all my matches during that first year. At a time in my first year I felt like I was stagnant in my progression of learning but with the help of my coaches and teammates, I learned the true meaning of hard work. My couches pushed me and by the beginning of the second year, my team and I saw a difference in my techniques. I was then losing 20/50 matches that I was faced up against. The extra effort that I put into my practices helped me get into the masters tournament held at Morro Bay High School. During one of my matches I landed on my right arm and sprained one of my shoulder ligaments. I learned what it felt like to be able to do nothing. That thought made me think of all the things that I should be doing while I still have the ability to do. This hard, deep mentality that I learned during wrestling is the ability to persist until the end. I believe the mentality that I learned during those two years will help me face difficult situations in the future.
Cross Country:
Last year, as a senior in high school, I joined the cross country team. It was something that I never even thought of doing even more than joining the girls wrestling team, as I barely was able to run one mile. The first day I ran a three mile (the minimum distance required to run) on the track with two of my friends from the wrestling team. At the end of the three miles I was out of breath but, I thought to myself that I accomplished something that I didn't even think was possible. After that day I knew that anything is possible as long as you try and put in enough effort. By the end of the season I was able to run 7 miles without stopping and I was able to place 4th at one of the Cross Country meets out of 100 girls.
School Clubs
Art Club:
My Freshman year of high school I joined the Art Club. The meeting consisted of practicing different art styles and innovative club activities. One activity was creating a float idea that would parade around the streets of Giddings and Main. Another activity was community services at a local elementary school where the members of the art club took shifts in helping the face painting booth.
Yoga Club:
This was a club that I joined my senior year of high school. On several occasions the yoga club met in the quad at Redwood high school and was led by one of the leaders of the club. We had to bring a towel or yoga mat in order to participate in partner or single yoga.
FBLA:
FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. I was a part of this club my Junior and Senior year. By taking several multiple choice, 100 question tests I was able to earn plaques and travel to state with my team. For both years I was able to make it to state FBLA by placing top 10 in each of my chosen categories in which I studied. To be away from family and live on my own for a week with my friends around me during state, I was able to grow in my own independence.
Community Service
I volunteered my time over the years in serving my community. During my time in 4-H I collected shopping carts from Tractor Supply in Hanford and returned them back to the store. I also created placemats for the elderly in the retirement homes and then delivered them to several locations in Visalia. For my FBLA club we helped set up books to be sold in the sequoia mall for one of our local shops. Other than doing community service in my clubs, I served on my own time as well. I helped two of the local elementary school festivals for Halloween by one, face painting, and two, watching the bouncy houses. In 2022 I participated in the Redwood haunted house. I was In charge of setting up, working and doing face paint makeup for the zombie section of the haunted house. The haunted house took a total of 6 hours from start to finish. I then was welcomed to help the VTEC FFA with their Diamonds and Denim fundraiser. This consisted of serving guests, running pitchers, and cleaning dishes. In total I worked 4 hours when the event was finished.
