  • Accession of specimens into LIS by selecting the appropriate location, date, and time of collection.
  • Process patient specimens according to priority, adequacy, and acceptability to ensure accurate order entry and high-quality laboratory results.
  • Manage the specimen Expected list and Outstanding list in EPIC throughout a shift and communicate follow-ups as needed.
  • Resolve unusual test orders by contacting physicians, nursing stations, or reference laboratories. Scan finalized reports into patient charts for identification of organisms and Susceptibilities.
  • Pack and ship to reference labs for further testing utilizing the proper shipping category system and safety protocols.
  • Aliquot specimens according to established departmental procedures. Preparation of slides, and plating of specimens as appropriate within the Microbiology Department - including Molecular PCR and Mycobacterium testing.
  • Set up, maintain, and verify the sterility of lab equipment and tools.
  • Perform QC as needed, and maintain reports and daily checklists.

  • PACS is most commonly used during orthopedic, vascular, cardiac, neurologic, gynecologic, urologic, transplant, and trauma surgeries.
  • The American Red Cross utilizes PACS policies and procedures designed in conformance with the guidelines and standards of the AABB, The Joint Commission, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and applicable state requirements.
  • Perioperative autologous cell salvage (PACS) technicians set up, operate, and break down the Haemonetics Cell Saver machine.
  • Technicians document patient information and track the amount of shed blood collected, processed, and returned to the patient.
  • Technicians work independently, and act as an ambassador of the American Red Cross.
  • Practice sterile technique and safety protocols when preparing for a surgical case.
  • On-call PACS technicians provide services for RRMC, TRMC, AACH, and Providence as well as routine and non-routine blood delivery services for RRMC, TRMC including pickup and delivery to Medford Airport 24/7.
