Summary

I am a designer that had devoted their life to sharing the joy of rock climbing. This passion is demonstrated through the profession of graphic design and routesetting. Graphic design allows the creation of the image of what rock climbing is and can be while also garnering interest. On the other hand, routesetting is creating the product that physically and emotionally challenges a person's limit and, as a result, possibly get people obsessed with the sport. Through my years in the rock climbing industry I have personally witnessed the humble beginnings of someone's journey in rock climbing to the very pinnacle of competing in the Olympics.

Work History

Assistant Head Routesetter & Graphic Designer

HiClimb LLC
Honolulu, HI
04.2022 - Current
  • Personally scouted for my experience that I accumulated from routesetting in a well-known climbing gym in Japan and enticed by the challenge of creating a brand new climbing community in Hawaii where there was little to none at all.
  • Created logo designs and all forms of media for every event to garner high expectations before each occasion.
  • As the Assistant Head, I am there to implement and direct my vision to the team to setup our community for success. This entails creating climbs that specifically teaches certain skills to level up their climbing.
  • Currently, the gym has retained and gained more members every year due to the multitude of events held every year and the constant high-quality routesetting that is being done by the routesetting team.

Routesetter

Kona Cliffs
Kona, HI
07.2023 - Current
  • Another opportunity to develop a climbing community in Kona of the Big Island.
  • Unlike HiClimb, there is zero climbing community, and, as a result, the routesetting style also changed as we are trying to introduce climbing to a community that has no prior knowledge of the sport.
  • The challenge is immense because the opening routes set can either push the gym to glory or force the gym to close.
  • After many months, the gym is doing relatively well, with members increasing every month and now a youth program is being implemented.

Chief Designer & Routesetter

Funabashi Rocky Co.,Ltd.
Tokyo, Japan
09.2019 - 04.2022
  • The company focus was to share the joy of climbing through their climbing gyms and the products that they created. I found this to align with my goals as a person enjoying rock climbing, but wanting to contribute more to the rock climbing community.
  • As a Chief Designer, the first major project was to create a new brand identity for the multiple climbing gyms that the company owned. The original concept of the gyms was a non-commercial look that demonstrated a mom and pop look. This included from a cartoon logo to no standardized interior design for any of the six locations. However, the company shifted its motive of wanting to aggressively expand. Because of this, a new logo was necessary and one that can be easily placed next to other established brands/companies, but remained distinct and recognizable when by itself. This also meant a brand new website, new merchandise, and standardized interior design.
  • Second major project was creating a marketing package for specific products that the company was selling. This includes climbing holds and an app that would help facilitate the experience in a climbing gym. The image for these products was "with our holds and app we can increase the joy of being in your gym". This entailed photoshoots to create just the right image, creating social media posts, building and updating websites, etc.
  • As a Routesetter, the gym catered from beginners to pros that are competing in the Olympics. The learning curve to be able to create climbs for such a wide range of skills was enormous. Through immense rigorous training for 1 year, the company was able to mentor me to have the ability to work at any facility/ any climbing competitions and bring value.
  • In my second year, there were multiple opportunities to set a competition simulator for Olympic Athletes and International Competitors. This entailed multiple days with no rest every month setting problems that they could possibly see in the Olympics or International Competitions.
