As a machine gun squad leader I was in charge of seven marines and two medium machine guns. My squad and I operated in support of platoon and company level exercises. Positioning our fires in support of maneuver elements, sometimes we would be suppressing targets only 50 meters in front of friendly troops. This requires a great deal of trust from my platoon commander or company commander seeing that live rounds from my guns are impacting just in front of him. We would also support rifle platoons in the defense, on raids, and any other mission profile for a rifle company. This is a job for a sergeant. When I started out as a squad leader I was a Lance Corporal two ranks below sergeant, and finish my career as a squad leader as a corporal, I fulfilled a billet of rank than mine. I was interested with more responsibility than most people within my rank.
