Throughout my life, I have been very conscious of the healthcare disparities that impact women of color, especially in terms of maternal health. The concerning rates of maternal mortality among Black and Latina women in the United States have significantly influenced my perspective and career aspirations. Having constantly seen the detrimental effects on women of color because of a lack of care towards them has fueled my ambition to pursue a career as a physician assistant in obstetrics and gynecology, where I can advocate for and deliver care to those in greatest need.
My path toward this profession started during my undergraduate studies when I gave a presentation on maternal mortality in a different country than the US and was shown the drastic changes in how other countries care for mothers compared to how the US cares for mothers, specifically mothers of color. As I was very hands-on with the project, I observed different studies that showed the apprehension and distrust from women of color seeking medical care. This experience made me want to help bridge the divide between healthcare providers and underserved populations, so that women of color can take control of their health.
I believe that effective healthcare extends past clinical expertise, but also requires empathy, cultural competence, and dedication to change. As a physician's assistant, my goal is to establish a secure and inclusive environment where women feel heard and valued. The field of OBGYN is particularly interesting to me because it allows me to make meaningful connections with my patients during some of their most pivotal moments in their lives, pregnancy and childbirth.
My aim is to not only deliver high-quality care, but also educate women about their health and advocate for changes that address underlying causes of health disparities. I aspire to be part of a transformative movement that prioritizes the health and well-being of women of color.
I am dedicated to continuous learning and collaboration with different healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive the care they deserve. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to make a positive impact in the field of maternal health, advocate for change, and contribute to a future where all women have access to the care they deserve.
