I am an aide (Paraprofessional) and work with mainly Autistic kids. In our classroom the head teacher as well as the aides work with each kid. It gives them as well as us a chance to learn with and about the kids while teaching them in our own ways. Not only do I help these kids with their school work, I take them to the restroom which can mean changing pulls ups/diapers etc. I take them to their specials (art, music, gym) recess, as well as to lunch where I have to monitor and make sure they are eating etc.

Some days are good and other days are very much a challenge. Most days at least one of our kiddos has a meltdown over having to write one letter or not getting his/her way in general. (Being held accountable is hard!) Sometimes that leads to us having to put them in a hold for their safety as well as our own. (I have Crisis prevention Intervention training which the school has us do) and have been in this position for 4+ years now so it’s nothing new, but it’s never easy. This job is emotionally and physically draining at times but I love it, and even on those extra challenging days it’s truly helped me grow so much as a person.
