Extracurricular Activities

As a Rotational DJ at KTSW 89.9 FM, I curated and broadcasted live music programming across a variety of genres, engaging with a diverse audience through both pre-planned and spontaneous playlists. I was responsible for selecting music that aligned with the station’s theme, time of day, and target demographic, ensuring an entertaining and cohesive listening experience.

  • I operated soundboards and broadcasting software to ensure smooth transmission and high-quality sound during my shifts. I also had the opportunity to conduct live interviews with local artists and musicians, promoting regional talent and fostering a sense of community.
  • Beyond the on-air work, I contributed to station promotions and social media outreach, using platforms to advertise upcoming shows, events, and new music releases, which helped increase audience engagement. This experience honed my skills in time management, adaptability, and communication while deepening my understanding of radio programming and broadcasting technology.

Research

In 2024, I graduated from the Honors College, where I completed a capstone thesis exploring obesity trends within the Latinx community, titled "The Immigrant Paradox and Obesity". My research compared the prevalence of obesity among recently immigrated Latinx individuals to that of more acculturated (second-generation) Latinx populations. This project involved extensive data collection, analysis of demographic health trends, and examination of cultural and socio-economic factors influencing health outcomes. The findings of my research were presented at the Honors Research Conference, where I had the opportunity to engage with faculty and peers, receiving valuable feedback and contributing to ongoing discussions on public health disparities within immigrant communities. This experience allowed me to strengthen my analytical, writing, and presentation skills while deepening my understanding of health disparities and the immigrant experience.

Community Service

  • From May 2023 to November 2024, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, I assisted the Advanced Wound Care Clinic on a weekly basis, from Tuesday to Thursday, providing critical support with patient transfers, cleaning patient rooms, and assisting individuals with common self-care tasks. This role helped me develop a keen attention to detail, improve patient care, and work efficiently in a fast-paced, clinical environment.
  • As a Bilingual Elections Clerk with Fort Bend County Elections in Richmond, I worked long hours during election days, from 6 am to 7 pm, where I assisted Spanish-speaking voters in exercising their 15th Amendment rights. This role enhanced my communication skills and provided me with a deeper understanding of civic engagement while ensuring the smooth operation of the election process for diverse community members.
