  • Provide diagnosis and treatment to children in pre-school through High school. Students are seen individually, in small groups, in classroom and social group settings. Consultation with teachers imperative in the Multi-handicapped classrooms. Focus on instruction in social language to children on the Autism spectrum. Peer groups created using evidence based practices to establish social language skills for students with disabilities as well as teaching peer’s strategies to assist students in the group as well as throughout the academic setting. Use of evidence based practices in all areas of language including comprehension and/or use of a spoken (i.e., listening and speaking), written (i.e., reading and writing), and/or signed (e.g., American Sign Language) communication system.Collaboration and instruction for individuals using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Collaborate with teachers to incorporate speech-language skills into the curriculum on the IEP as well as creating social stories for students to improve social success. Attend IEP and MFE meetings as well as Intervention team meetings. Collaboration with parents to insure follow-up in the home setting and needs in the school setting. Billing, progress reports and assessments provided as part of the Medicaid billing system used by the district.

Much of the responsibilities are collaborating with parents to ensure practice of skills throughout the school year and over summer break. Teaching parents to use by modeling and instruction so skills can be practiced throughout the day and carried over into other learning, home and social environments.

Utilize various forms of Augmentative/Alternative communication devices (Say-It-Simply, Big Mack, IntroTalker, AlphaTalker, ChatBox). In-service staff on proper usage of the computers with the individuals who reside here. Coordinate services between SLP’s and staff. Collaborate with other support staff services. In-service and train new staff in working with individuals with communication disorders. Enter and edit Speech/Language assessments in the word processing system. Attend team and IPP meetings to discuss how to address individual’s specific needs. Consult with the workshop to assist in successful carryover of communication during the individual’s workday. Disorders addressed include: Tourette's, Autism, Downs Syndrome, OCD, Psychiatric disorders, and various genetic disorders.

  • SLP services included seeing children in both day treatment and early intervention centers. Provide Speech/Language services to students with severe behavior handicaps and various emotional disturbances. Used various forms of technology (digital camera, Intellikeys, Overlay Maker and various other equipment) to enhance instruction. Obtained funding and purchased 8 computers to enhance communication skills and installed all of the software for each of them. Instructed staff on use of the computers to enhance language development. In serviced staff on incorporation the computer software and hardware in to the curriculum for language development. Team-taught with teacher during skill streaming classes. Created social stories to enhance social skill development.
