Red carded as a Firefighter 1, my duties and responsibilities were to respond with Big Bear Hot Shots to both emergency and non-emergency situations as a Senior Firefighter. As a Senior Firefighter I would receive direction from either my Captain or squad leader for the task at hand, then I would lead my module as a crew boss trainee. I also responded with the helicopter as a qualified Helitack crew member/ Senior Firefighter/ Apprentice and with the BDF Mountaintop Engines to both emergency and nonemergency situations.

I inspected the condition of assigned tools, equipment and gear and I maintained or replaced as appropriate. I used safe and effective procedures when utilizing all assigned tools and equipment. I have trained and can properly use the fire shelter. I have a good working knowledge of the Incident Command System and I understand and follow the chain of command. I have knowledge of fire behavior, suppression strategies and tactics. I responded to other emergency incidents such as Medical Aide, Traffic Accidents, Structure Fire, Search and Rescues, Flooding etc.

• My non suppression duties included but were not limited to: Station and Vehicle Maintenance, various fuels projects, Campground maintenance, Prevention Programs.

Fuels Crew

Fuels projects which include hazardous fuels reduction and restoration of fire adapted ecosystems along the woodland-urban interface. Duties included but not limited to, thinning of timber, woodlands, or shrubs with chainsaws, hand and other power tools. Utilizing prescribed fire to reduce fuels, pilling and chipping of slash, chemical application to undesirable fuels; monitoring pre and post fire effects; and fire suppression on occasion. Participated in burn unit prep, fire operations, maintenance of equipment and supplies, mop up and monitoring of prescribed fire, and fire suppression activities.

Senior Firefighter/ Helicopter Crew Member

• Personnel transport: These duties include manifesting personnel, providing detailed aircraft briefing, ensuring crew tools are prepared correctly and abide by the IHOG guidelines to fly inside aircraft. Also assists in loading and unloading personnel and gear.
• Cargo transport: I serve as a cargo master when needed. I oversee or assist in the process of building cargo nets or setting up equipment to be long-lined to the fire line. I ensure weights of the cargo loads are accurate and are within the helicopters allowable.

• Flight Crew: I respond on the helicopter to reported wild land fires, smoke checks, vehicle fires, and other miscellaneous tasks. If working on the fire line, I was either am assigned to a chain saw as a sawyer/ swamper or assigned to a hand tool during suppression activity. Other operations could include assisting in water point (filling helicopter water tank off of hydrant).
• Drive Crew: I drove the helicopter/crew support vehicles to a designated helibase and or airport. Once the trucks arrive, if needed, I start setting up a helibase according to IHOG guidelines and set up base radios for communication with aircraft.
• Air Base Radio Operator (ABRO): One who runs radios and keeps track of flight hours, missions, and flight following during fire suppression activities on
the helibase.
• Air Logistics. This roll intercepts incoming logistical orders from the fire line that will then be transferred to the helibase for cargo missions. The duties of this position are to ensure that all logistical cargo needs are met within fire camp before they are transferred from supply or food unit to helibase.
• Dip Site Manager: Ensuring that a water dip site that helicopters use is clear of
people and obstructions. Monitor and record water usage.
Wildland Fire Suppression Duties:

• Suppression duties include but are not limited to: Using hoses/appliances of various types/lengths/diameters, hand tools such as Pulaski, McLeod, shovel, chainsaw in the direct suppression of wild land, structure, vehicle fires. I am able to select the proper hand tool, or hose for the assigned job.

• Line construction duties: I am responsible for using hand tools to cut direct or indirect fire line by reducing the threat of spotting or slop over by rearranging, removing or fireproofing fuels on or near the fire line.

• I adapted to an ever-changing work environment. I inspected hose and accessories for type, size and condition. I inspected the condition of assigned tools, equipment and gear and I maintained or replaced as appropriate. I used safe and effective procedures when utilizing all assigned tools and equipment. • Mop Up Operations: Use a systematic procedure for locating and suppressing fire within the assigned area. I am able to locate and extinguish hot materials or burning fuels.
• Communications: Maintain communications with the crew and my supervisor at all times.
