As an historian of Early America, and an Adoptee, I journey eastward, from Michigan—the old Northwest Territory—to New England, and back in time toward that older West, retracing the paths of migration and telling the stories of ancestors from four families: immigrants, colonists, the uprooted and the invaders, self-inventors and slave traders; soldiers, farmers, mothers founding in no-man’s land, orphans
