Summary

I am an Environmental Engineering student at FIU. I’m passionate about biomimicry and exploring how natural systems can inspire the way we design, solve environmental challenges, and approach remediation. I want to bridge engineering and nature to create innovative solutions that are not only effective, but also more sustainable.

MDC ICC Beach Cleanup
01.2024
  • During this beach cleanup Clean Miami Beach, Inter Miami Club, and MDC SGA all collaborated to do a beach cleanup to commemorate MLK day
  • During this cleanup we were handed rubber gloves, a bucket, and a trash picker to pick up trash around South Point Beach
  • After the pickup we gathered around and measured how many pounds of trash we picked up - a lot of which was plastic
  • Learned that a lot of the plastic actually comes from neighboring countries like the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Cuba, The Bahamas, etc
  • If people give up using straws and only sipping from cups or using a reusable straw as well as using reusable bags for groceries everyone can collectively reduce the amount of plastic that gets thrown away

Volunteer

Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Lenny and Penny Thompson Pineland Preserve
01.2024
  • Learned that Pindo Palm trees are highly flammable and much like the plant habitat in this preserve it has adapted to being burned.
  • In the park there are many of these palm trees, but they were covered by this native plant that looks like a vine, and it is highly invasive and kills the plants engulfed in it.
  • Pulled out the roots vine-like plants as well as collecting any trash we might find in between the plants
  • Went on a 10-minute hike where James was talking about all the other native plants the preserve had to offer

Volunteer

Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Matheson Hammock Preserve
01.2024
  • Planted trees in Matheson Hammock Preserve for national Arbor Day. The goal is to plant 300 trees throughout the year.
  • Planted 2 different types of native trees.
  • Went on a small 10-minute hike to see the rest of the land of the preserve and learn about the different plant species and the rocks that were pushed to the land from bodies of water.
  • There were tables from different organizations that EEL works with that had things such as pictures of native and non native species, and we had to place them in the correct category.
