Research

  • THE EFFECTS OF GLYPHOSATE ON CHICKEN EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT, Individual Research, California University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Louise Nicholson, 2020-01-01, 2021-01-01, Devised a question on whether or not glyphosate has an effect on chicken embryo development and is mediated by retinoic acid signaling. Injected chicken embryo eggs with three different concentrations of glyphosate that were diluted in PBS. Incubated multiple rounds of chicken eggs, alternating between three and seven days. Took data on the morphology of each chicken embryo and collected a tissue sample from each embryo. RNA and DNA was extracted from each tissue sample using Quiagen kits and standard Trizol extraction. Results from Fishers Exact Test of independence were not significantly different (p>0.05) and overall, glyphosate concentrations could have adverse effects on human development, even at low concentrations. Presented a poster at Strike-A-Spark and a mini-presentation at CPUB.
  • TESTING FOR ANTIBIOTIC-PRODUCING MICROORGANISMS IN A SOIL SAMPLE, Shared Partner Research, Independent Results, California University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Michelle Valkanas, 2020-09-01, 2020-12-01, Diluted a soil sample collected from California University of Pennsylvania using serial dilutions. Formed a master plate using the pick and patch method and took data on different morphological characteristics from each colony. Performed differential and selective media tests from each colony on the master plate, using Mannitol salt agar and MacConkey agar. Tested all isolates from the master plate on three ESKAPE-safe relatives: S. epidermidis, P. aeruginosa, and B. aerius for any production of antibiotics. Results showed no isolates produced any antibiotics. Presented a speed talk at Regional Science Consortium.
