Research Study

Chronic Pain Education of Adults in the Emergency Room, The purpose of the study was to educate registered nurses and emergency room nurse practitioners on how to treat and manage patients presenting with chronic pain. The participants were given a 15-question true and false pretest. Next, the participants were given an educational newsletter on the different types of pain, treatment, and management of this population. The last step of the educational session was a posttest. The goal was for the providers to gain increased knowledge of the difference between acute and chronic pain, different types of pain management, and advice on prescribing pain medications. The objective was for the providers to feel more secure in their skills in treating this population. The data revealed that there was an increase in knowledge, the pretest average score was 77.2, and the posttest average scores were 96.1. The data revealed that years of experience showed no significance in the scores. The data from the pilot study supports that there is a need for education on chronic pain in the acute care setting. This pilot study will add to the existing body of evidence on chronic pain management in the acute care setting. Implications for the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) are discussed.
