I entered my nursing career directly in to Critical Care. I have been in nursing for 23 years. All of my nursing career was in critical care, critical care virtual nursing (both bedside & clinical side) and my current position has given me the skills needed to be a leader and mentor.
Virtual RN - worked in a virtual program called E-care. This unit monitored and assisted 10-12 different hospitals across the state of MD who had small critical care units without 24/7 intensivist coverage. The unit was staffed by 2-3 RN's and a UMMC physician. We did rounds on each patient, monitored EKG's & vitals signs, When the site hospitals needed assessments, orders, physician input, etc., they would contact the assigned RN and seek advice and assistance. We were able to camera into the patients room, assess the patient, ask questions of the bedside nurse and then review the needs and information with out on staff physician. The physician would then write appropriate orders, treatments, etc. Prior to working in this unit, I was employed at one of the site hospitals in Critical Care and had experience using this virtual system at the bedside. I was fortunate enough to operate on both sides of the system.
