Core role - preparing science experiments and equipment for pupils within a high school science department.

Requires:

  • Effectively communicating with teachers to ensure their requested experiment is delivered to a high standard and in a timely manner.
  • Every day requires working as part of a larger team (science department), a small team (technicians), and individually.
  • The role requires a lot of proactivity and motivation as your day is individually lead.
  • Mainly practical work - long hours on feet, heavy lifting and constant movement is common.
  • Common tasks are as follows - making up standard chemical solutions and decanting chemicals with accurancy for science experiments. Generating gases, level 3 microscopy work, microscopy slide preparation and dissection preparation.
  • High level of precaution and attention to detail is required. All work is undertaken with the utmost care when dealing with hazardous chemicals. Safety precautions must be followed in line with technician protocol.
  • Computer-based tasks are also undertaken to input chemicals into the electronic database and take stock counts.

Additionally – I assist with the advanced higher science twilight sessions after working hours, deliver science demonstrations for the young people, assist the teachers with science delivery at local primary schools and assist with level 3 microbiology training courses for teaching staff and technicians.
