My responsibilities as a labor worker involved a wide range of hands-on tasks in field maintenance and construction support. I installed new filter socks and hammered wooden stakes around infrastructure pads and right-of-way dirt roads. A large part of my job focused on site cleanup—removing old filter socks, collecting debris and trash, cutting off film, and laying down new rolls of curlex. I secured each section with new staples every two feet and helped dig trenches and move dirt around the perimeter of freshly installed curlex.
I often measured and cut materials to size, picked and replaced longer wooden stakes, and assisted in maintaining the perimeters of infrastructure pads. Trash pickup and organizing job materials were also regular parts of the routine. I frequently spotted for operators handling equipment such as dozers, excavators, mini-excavators, skid steers, forklifts, mini forklifts, and front loaders. I also assisted CDL drivers during semi-truck and trailer hookups.
My maintenance duties included cleaning out air filters, refueling diesel and DEF tanks, and supporting operations by guiding operators around obstacles to avoid damaging infrastructure or guide wires. I worked in areas not always visible to operators, ensuring clear communication and safety. Other responsibilities included shoveling and raking dirt around concrete pillars, as well as operating small machinery like skid steers, mini forklifts, and mini excavators for loading and unloading materials onto trailers or truck beds.
Typical materials included filter sock pallets, hay bales, rolls of curlex, and bags of field seed. I also strapped down materials for transport, handled rock materials for erosion control, and dug dirt for water bars—filling them with rock to create barriers against rainfall. Occasionally, I marked off red tags on field maps and performed general maintenance tasks as recommended by environmental services for site repairs.
