Luna Alhallak

This experience is based on being voted into the team and I chose to take this opportunity to serve my community and inform them to the best of my ability about Islam. There were weekly tasks to be done, which accumulated to 102 hours dedicated to the organization through meetings, events, and work from home. I learned to use multiple websites and systems through the NJIT database to organize and book events as well as equipment for my team. I acquired additional problem-solving and communication skills as I was required to meet with many people and send numerous emails to resolve issues throughout my time on the team.

I chose to take this job as my time after school was only spent on homework and I wanted to learn customer service skills. I loaded, unloaded, and moved material to and from storage and production areas, performed general housekeeping and cleaning tasks, assisted team members with tasks that require group effort, worked flexible schedules and extra shifts to meet business needs, and operated cash registers for cash, check, and credit card transactions with excellent accuracy levels. I learned to communicate with my staff as well as customers to meet everyone's needs while also balancing my social life and school life to the best of my ability.

I chose to participate in this experience for a total of 15 hours as I myself am Syrian and know what it is like to be deprived of basic necessities. Items that were packaged included clothes, kids toys, hygiene products, menstrual products, shoes, and preserved canned foods, to name a few. I developed a systems-based approach to establish successful completion of event tasks, arranged numerous boxes in trucks to be delivered for aid to Syrian refugees, and utilized project management skills to meet event deadlines and complete requirements. I learned what it is to be a team player but also a leader, communication, and problem-solving skills.
