Camp Counselor

Camp Oneka
07.2021 - 08.2021
  • During my time in the summer of 2021 at Camp Oneka, which was an all-girls camp. At Camp Oneka the counselors lived in the cabins with the girls in groups of 4-6 with an age range of anywhere from 6-17. I worked closely with the girls from helping them in their cabins to camp activities to serving them food. I always tried my best to be understanding and encouraging when it came to the young campers, as I knew it was hard to be away from home for so long, and to combat this I always tried making fun activities like storytelling and making up games. I led a broad spectrum of activities, but my most frequent were sports and crafts. During mid-camp season I discovered the pottery room which had pottery wheels and slip molds, along with a kiln and large bags of clay. I asked my supervisors if I could revive this activity due to some prior knowledge I had of college and high school experience I had gained. My supervisors had agreed that yes I could try to revive this old camp activity and I had taught the girls all that I had known and even had some of the older girls try wheel throwing. I taught them mostly how to hand build with clay which was mostly stoneware and for the younger girls air dry clay. I very much enjoyed this position and if it weren't for the distance I would have worked my ongoing summers there.
  • Participated in regular staff meetings to discuss strategies for improvement in areas such as programming, behavior management, and staff training.
  • Evaluated campers' progress and provided feedback to parents.
  • Instructed campers to observe proper behavior and etiquette to avoid conflicts and unruly activities.
  • Responded to emergencies by following first-aid guidelines and coordinating with medical personnel for participants requiring medical attention.
  • Assisted in preparing meals and snacks to provide nutritional needs to campers.
  • Set up and demonstrated proper use of tents, sleeping bags and camping equipment to encourage preparedness and organization.
  • Worked with children of varying ages, interests, skills, and developmental levels.
  • Ensured camper safety by enforcing camp rules, supervising group activities, and responding promptly to incidents or concerns.
  • Led groups of children safely through a variety of camp activities.
  • Acted as a positive role model, demonstrating strong leadership skills and exemplifying the camp's core values.
  • Collaborated with other camp counselors to design fun and enriching learning activities for campers.
