· Research: Surveyed shark communities using dermal denticles within sediment samples to estimate the relative abundance of sharks in a specific area
· Investigation: Can dermal denticles help us understand how shark communities change across changing gradients of human impacts
· Summary: Differences in shark abundance and community composition change with human impacts. Higher human impacts areas had less sharks.
· Mentors: Erin Dillon and Douglas McCauley
“Santa Ana Watershed Assessment” Fall 2017
· Research: Surveying water contamination along with changes in sediment size and river morphology with decreasing gradient in watershed rivers
· Investigation: Sampled 16 different sites in the watershed: water and soil samples, obtained GPS measurements, and analyzed all samples in the lab
· Conclusion: Increasing contaminants with lower elevations and overall, more urbanization. Sediment sizes were also smaller and rounder as we moved downstream
