ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supervises the delivery of kenneling services; monitors and ensures the proper care, enrichment, cleaning, feeding, watering, and health of animals; documents animal illness;
- Supervises the operations of the shelter including ensuring the implementation and observance of applicable laws, rules and regulations governing shelter facilities and operations.
- Ensures safety of people and animals by providing proper training and tools for use in cleaning, interacting, and moving of animals.
- Tracks animal stage and ensures an efficient flow of animals through the system to reduce length of stay and best utilize kennel space.
- Selects animals for adoption, transfer, foster, and evaluation. Works closely with intake staff and program coordinators to minimize intake and maximize live outcomes.
- Trains and monitors staff and volunteers assisting in this role.
2. Conducts a variety of administrative duties pertaining to staffing and facility operations:
- Participates in developing, implementing, and administering Animal Shelter policies and procedures.
- Inspects kennel accommodations and facility conditions, reports and/or assists in coordination and resolution of facility maintenance and repairs.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; provides discipline as needed.
- Prepares and maintains employee work schedules and time keeping; monitors and ensures appropriate levels of staff coverage, including volunteers, community service workers, and temporary employees.
- Prepares and disseminates interdepartmental communications.
3. Seeks opportunities to promote the organization and humane education concepts at community events and in the news media; represents organization at community events, seeking advantageous partnerships with community businesses, vendors and individuals, including schools, youth groups, community organizations.
4. Miscellaneous:
- Assists staff with daily operational duties
- Participates in euthanizing animals when deemed necessary.
- Manages, in the absence of the Animal Protection Supervisor and the Animal Services Manager, the Animal Shelter’s quarantine and stray receiving/reclaim functions; coordinates the intake and release of quarantined and stray animals; records daily observations; documents animal illness and treatment; monitors and maintains compliance with State quarantine policies.

- Considerable judgment, tact, sensitivity, and flexibility are required to deal with the public, and other city employees, external partners and vendors.
- Ability to apply knowledge of laws and regulations to animal control situations fairly and accurately. Uses safety procedures to handle animals appropriately and humanely. Prioritizes and assigns tasks to employees for the efficient operation of the shelter. Plans strategies and programs as needed for effective animal control and sheltering. Analyzes situations to determine proper application and enforcement of ordinances and laws. Prioritizes tasks and utilizes computer software and programs to create and maintain records.
- Assists in hiring, trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.
- Participates in animal adoption, volunteer, transfer, veterinary, disposition and/or other assigned programs, including budget, purchasing supplies and maintaining inventory.
- Ability to make daily decisions regarding disposition of animals: selection for adoption, rescue or euthanasia; hold time calculations; problem solving and use of good judgment involving animal health, behavior, risks, cases and other critical situations.
