BIO

  • Born in Goettingen, Germany, she grew up with her parents, artists Hella and Hans-Ulrich Buchwald, in Hannover. She studied art at the HBK in Hamburg, and theater at Folkwang Hochschule Essen, and she received her BFA at S.A.I.C., Chicago in 1990. She exhibited at Oliva Gallery, Woman Made Gallery, Murphy Hill Gallery, and Peter Jones Gallery in Chicago, and at Gedok Hannover, and took part in many group shows in Hannover and Chicago, and organized International Art Symposia with German and US artists, dancers, and filmmakers since 1990, funded in part by the Goethe Institute, the Illinois Arts Council, and the Sister City Committee in Chicago.
  • 2024, she presented the exhibitions and Symposium, “The Ocean Between VII, Islands of Life” in Hannover and “Rebellenwellen” at Kunstraum Reuter in Berlin, and continued her International Art exchanges featuring German and US artists supported by Oliva Gallery, in Chicago, and Bei Koc Gallery, and KrassUnartig Gallery in Hannover..
  • 2025, she presented“The Ocean Between VIII,” Luminosity “ Art Symposium with art, music, dance and multimedia at Oliva Gallery, and at the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble, founded by Ellyzabeth Adler, who performed ” Healing Letters” 2021, as part of the Ocean Between III symposium in Hannover and in Berlin, where she met many of the German artists, who became part of the symposia 2021-2025.
  • Ms. Buchwald also directed mask theater shows with masks created by Hans-Ulrich Buchwald, the creator of Schmierer Theater Hannover. She performed“ Luminous Creatures” during the events Aug. 1 and 2, 2025 with her cast of mask dancers Althea Teamer, Tim Smith,Juan Irizarry, Lissa Rommel and Patricia Nash at the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble, 1650 W. Foster, Chicago, 60640.
