Undergraduate Capstone Research BIOL401: Dr. Olufemi’s Laboratory, Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas
I am an undergraduate student who engages in biomedical research in Dr. Olufemi's laboratory, where I learn different molecular genetic techniques. I engage in DNA, RNA, and protein isolation. I also understand and work with gel electrophoreses such as agarose and SDS. I learn and work with Western blotting. I am working on querying different genomic databases, such as the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), UCSC Genome Browser (UCSC), and Ensembl genome browser. In addition, I query microRNA nucleotide sequences at the microRNA database (miRDB), an online database for miRNA target prediction and functional annotations. I performed DNA analysis, sequencing alignment, and blasting using different information from the various genome databases. I design primers for PCR amplification experiments using primer design software, such as Primer 3, Amplifix, and others. I check for primer dimers when designing primers. I also perform in silico PCR to check if my primer design is accurate enough to amplify the expected size PCR end products.
Dr. Olufemi’s laboratory focuses on the mechanism(s) of gene regulation (i.e., miRNA role in gene regulation), genomic studies, toxicogenomic, and innovation development.
