Award in recognition of one of two co-chairs of the Local Arrangements Team (LAT). Played a critical role in recruiting and coordinating annual conference volunteers, consisting of 18 colleagues, managing on-site operations at the NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo, and creating excitement about the annual conference city, in Seattle. As a member of the Annual Conference Committee (ACC), Mary brought local regional information regarding the conference site into the overall planning process, and served as the communication link between the ACC, their team members, and conference volunteers.

  • Have been a mentor to fellow GEMS colleagues regarding all aspects on graduate admission and student services.
  • Primary resource in providing comprehensive and high-quality service to prospective and current graduate students, across all three-campuses: Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma.
  • Advise graduate students on graduate education policies and procedures, degree and graduation requirements, and publication requirements for master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.
  • Advise staff and faculty on all three campuses: Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma regarding graduate education policies, procedures and deadlines.
  • INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENT ADMISSION
  • Certified Foreign Credentials Evaluator: Determine if graduate applicants have met University of Washington Graduate School’s minimum admission requirements. Evaluate foreign credentials to determine if qualification is comparable to a U.S. degree. And convert international grades to the U.S. grading system.
  • Verify applicants English proficiency requirement.
  • Serve as a certified Designated School Official (DSO): As a primary school administrator, serve as a liaison in immigration advising between newly admitted international graduate students, the school, and Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). As a certified DSO, I issue necessary immigration forms for F-1 student visa status, and guide students through the process of studying in the U.S.
  • LEADERSHIP IN TRAINING, TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND TROUBLESHOOTING
  • Train new GEMS colleagues on MyGrad Program and UW Student Database (SDB) systems
  • Train staff and faculty who are new users of MyGrad Program system
  • Create and publish GEMS OneNote Manual and MyGrad Program training videos
  • Assist with MyGrad Program technical support and troubleshooting
  • Work closely with MyGrad Program development team, to test new features, report bugs, and resolve issues by MyGrad Program users.
  • Assist in conducting MyGrad Program workshops, webinars, and information sessions as needed.
  • Assist in conducting webinars for students preparing to graduate and submit theses and dissertations.
  • GRADUATE SCHOOL POLICY AND OPERATIONS
  • Review and process a variety of admission and student petitions to the Dean of the Graduate School for exceptions to Graduate School policy.
  • Review and process application fee refunds.
  • In the deferral of admission process, responsible in transferring the Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) within the University Registrar’s Enrollment Confirmation System (ECS).
  • On a case-by-case basis, process ECD waiver request.
  • Review and approve theses and dissertations for publications in the University of Washington Libraries Research Works Service and ProQuest Theses & Dissertations.
  • Review and approve graduation, including reviewing and resolving final degree audits.
  • Collaborate on the development, implementation, and interpretation of Graduate School admission and degree related topics.
  • COMMUNICATIONS
  • Assist in developing and maintain web content.
  • Assist in writing communications, (email, blog posts, etc.) for prospective and current students, staff and faculty.
  • Routinely communicate with other units at the University of Washington, including the Office of the Registrar (OUR), International Student Services (ISS), International & English Language Programs (IELP), Student Fiscal Services (SFS), the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA), and Continuum College Registration Services.
